Once licensed, the student is qualified to work as a licensed practical nurse. The student will learn basic bedside care, take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration, treat bedsores, prepare and give injections and enemas, apply dressings, give alcohol rubs and massages, apply ice packs and hot water bottles and monitor catheters. Students will learn procedures that include reporting patient adverse reactions to medications or treatments, collecting samples for testing, performing routine laboratory tests, feeding patients and recording food and fluid intake and output. Students will learn to help patients with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, keeping patients comfortable and caring for the patient’s emotional needs. The PN student will also learn procedures for delivering, caring for and feeding infants.
